    Question Adam as a phone?

When I asked my provider for a clone of my existing SIM-card, they asked me about what tablet I had, because apparently you can't use normal SIM-cards[see edit] in the iPad (!). I'm guessing the Adam will work with all SIM-cards, but still this got me wondering what would be the best mobile provider subscription for me...

    1. Will it be possible to make phone calls using the Adam (using a hands-free to not look stupid)...
    - ...out of the box?
    - ...in the future using 3rd party apps?

    2. Will it be possible to send and receive SMS/MMS...
    - ...out of the box?
    - ...in the future using 3rd party apps?

    3. And out of curiosity; if #1 is yes, will it be possible to video-chat with iPad-owners or other videochat-capable phone owners without using the internet?
    - ...out of the box?
    - ...in the future using 3rd party apps?

Edit: By "normal SIM-card", what my provider meant was SIM-cards that support voice, SMS etc. instead of only data traffic. Not SIM vs. microSIM.

And a thread with general consensus that it will work as a phone:

Yeah, I have no feelings for or against microSIM really. I should have been more specific though; my provider gave the following reason: "If you have an iPad, it will unfortunately not work with a cloned SIM since iPad does not support voice."

Whether the adam will have cell phone capability remains to be seen, some people think that it's the 'mystery feature', which is indeed possible. As of current however, it will not.

As for 3rd party solutions, I'm sure you will eventually be able to use VOIP over 3g or wifi with 3rd party apps; however, this will not be out of the box, and this is not the same thing as a cell phone, VOIP is unreliable and eats up data when you use 3g.

Again, it depends if the adam has cell phone capability, which remains to be seen. Although the adam has a SIM port, if you stick your cell phone SIM in there and there is no cell phone capability, you're not going to be able to make calls or receive texts. Of course, there is the google voice option, but that is 3rd party, and a different number.

With ipad owners, no. with other video chat owners using the internet? maybe with other android users....it remains to be seen.....

ATT probably wont allow it onto their networks if it has phone capabilities. I have unlimited data I wish it had phone capabilities =/

Since the Adam is 3G-enabled; doesn't that imply that unless Notion Ink has blocked it or simply not included it in the firmware, it will be possible for 3rd party applications to implement phone capability?

Btw. I just got a reply from my phone provider, and they said that the issue with iPad was that since it doesn't have normal phone capabilities, it causes problems with the way cloned SIMs work here in Norway. I ordered a cloned SIM anyway just so it's ready when I get my Adam

Hey, It would be like a modern giant retro 80's phone. I can pull out my afro and totally rock the adam.

I'm going to use VOIP on mine. I have been using my google voice number for over a year now. It's my primary and only number. I'm sure the GV app SMS will work on it's own with no issues. The dialer will be an issue since the GV app integrates with the phone dialer. I also have a Gizmo Project account (which isn't open to new registration since google bought them a while ago). But that integrates a VOIP number with the GV number. So I'll just need some VOIP app for incoming calls.

The only issue is a need for a GV dialer that will tell GV to dial a number and have it ring the VOIP number for free calls.

I sure hope the built in address book integrates with Google contacts.

Ipad is microsim, but they are technically the same. There are plenty of ghetto hacks and adapters to fit a sim into a micro sim.
