I imagine that a 'Quick Start Card' would be advisable when you take the device out of the box. Show a picture with large arrow pointing to different interfaces and instructions on turning it on/off and find instructions on device.

Building electronic version of instruction book possibly using Wiki or PDF standards. Build instruction file with hot links to other files. If someone enters nice tutorial to expand some minor point in chapter three sub-para 2 it can be included with hotlink to second file with link back to main instructions.

Possibly someone could moderate instructions so that everyone could be on same "page"

Don't know if this has been done in Android/Linux yet. Just letting my mind wander. This could allow basic instruction set and ability to drill down as far as you wish as well as providing hotlinks to other sections/index/glossary and/or tutorials including code snippets.
