I asked a guy who used to work for DHL.

Also, I went to my Amazon.ca account and went through all invoices of the goods I have brought in the last 6months. I was only charged GST.

Looked into the invoice of my newegg.ca account and the same thing appeared. No PST, only GST.

I think GST is somewhere around 5%. Huh, 5% is far better than 15.5% which I was afraid of.
I hope that's the case (because in that case I'll be ordering when I'm back in Canada rather than in the UK where we have to pay 20%). But every international order I had, I have had to pay both the GST and the PST (now HST because of being landed in Ontario). I don't know about newegg.ca, but orders from Amazon.ca don't specifically show PST. In those provinces where they have HST, the tax total is lumped into what's labelled as the GST figure. But when you work it out it's 13% (i.e. the HST for Ontario).

There are a few reasons why the exact amount you'll have to pay is a little tricky to calculate. Firstly, it depends on what figure is actually quoted for customs declaration purposes. Secondly, the exchange rate used - the Canadian dollar is a bit stronger than it was, so this does work in our favour a bit. The other issue is what province the international deliveries actually LAND in rather than the province you live. In the above calculations I made the assumption that they would arrive in your home province but that might not be the case. If DHL main hub is in Alberta for example, then I think you would only pay 5% plus the processing fee.

It should be clearer once a few more Canadian orders trickle in; it seems to vary whether you need to pay upfront prior to actual delivery, or whether you'll be invoiced later. I've had both situations occur (sometimes it arrives months later a long time after I'd forgotten about it). The invoice for displaying what you owe does show the declared value, taxes and fees separately. So you'll be able to work backwards and figure out the percentages.

There is no upfront charge on delivery. I'm waiting for an invoice of $36.86 from TNT as I was told.

@shantiom, when you get your invoice can you put up the break down of the amounts. Also, does the Adam package label show an airport code. The code for Toronto Pearson Airport is YYZ, but I'm curious to know if they're sending over the North American Adams as a batch and then reshipping them separately to the customer's destination or sending them out individually from the shipping distribution centre in Hong Kong. One thing that makes me wonder about that is that originally Notion Ink said they were using DHL but now it sounds like they're using a range of options. Whatever the case, it sounds likely that you are only being charged 5% plus the processing fee. Which bodes well for other Canadian customers.

This is my first time ordering something that will be shipped to Canada and I am curious how the procedures will be like. I am currently at Kingston and I will be leaving Canada at the end of April. So I am wondering if the invoice happens to arrive months later, I wont be able to pay them. (since I am not a resident of Canada). Any clues?

@shantiom.... was there any CBSA sticker on the packaging indicating that it when threw customs. that usually indicates all activities done on the package by the good old Federal government. it should indicate if duty and taxes where applied and/or paid. if duty/taxes are to be applied CBSA wont let it go threw to it's destination unless the duty/taxes are paid (or guaranteed by the carriers bond)....

if there is no CBSA sticker or one with no duty/tax info the shipping companies will not send you a bill later since it one threw inspection without remittance. it's going to be your (and ours when we get it) responsibility to advise CBSA/CRA and be a good little Canadian a pay your taxes

look like TNT may be passing these under CBSA raydar. if TNT had payed the taxes on your behalf there would be some kind of CBSA sticker saying tax/duty was paid.

note : sorry for the acronim (use it to much at work) CBSA is Canada Border Services Agency

I'm waiting for an invoice from TNT, which I was told by the lady at TNT when I called to inquire about the shipment.

I don't have experience of TNT, but certainly going by Fedex and DHL you don't need to wait for the invoice. You can phone up and pay the charges by credit card as soon as the delivery has passed through customs and you have the shipping reference number. So you don't need to be resident as long as you have access to a phone. There's a phone number for TNT if you want to get some further advice though - 1-800-558-5555.
