@MATrickett fine. In your book, the vast majority of us (and it seems Engadget and the like) had unrealistic expectations from this product. We shouldn't have expected the adam to give us an orgasms everytime we switched it on......because it is a crossover product.

In my book, it does not meet standard quality of a $500+ tablet in 2011. Crossover product or not.

i'm with you MAT.. I think the PQ screen is great. I don't want vibrant light and colour, I want something easy on the eyes when I'm reading. That's why I bought it. I can sit inside with my Adam tilted to catch the light and it's beautiful to read. And outside it's a delight.

Maybe we need to start our own 'we don't hate the Adam coz we didn't come with unrealistic expectations and after all it's only a goddam tablet' forum.

While I wouldn't have put it quite that way, that's the basic gist of it. I'm not saying that I didn't have expectations, nor that my expectations have been fulfilled. Witness my comments on the battery life which was one of the major draws to purchasing the Adam in the first place (1: PQi, 2: battery life, 3: extensibility vis-a-vis USB etc.).

I would just argue that once you remove those expectations that a more reasonable discussion could occur that would ultimately be more useful. As it stands the argument seems to come down to, "Notion Ink--Please give me my money back because you didn't give me an IPS screen that I really wanted, but I also really wanted a Kindle screen to." Not that this is a bad desire. I would love that product, but it was clearly not that product when I went into the purchase even if I was just PO2.

I'm not quite sure what these "standard qualities" are. Thus far every single tablet that I've seen and used has failed for one reason or another. I think the more you argue "standard" the more you tend to stereotype what people are using their devices for.

Enough, though. The use of emboldened text seems to imply a direction that I would rather not go down.

lol if my post was the basic gist of it, why did you go on and on???? Do we have to get philosopical in order to truly appreciate a product? Hmmmm.

like Agent99 said on my other thread you posted on, great that you are happy with your adam.

lol wow....i gotta say i am taken aback on that statement.....i guess there had to be people out there who purposely DONT want a screen capable of vibrant light and color.

....cause usually, having the ability to adjust the contrast and lighting of the screen is enough for most.

wow... then you completely misunderstand both what I am saying and the real benefits the PQ screen offers. Things contrast and lighting can't fix.

but then that's the world we live in... if it's not shiny and vibrant it must be worthless...

    my review says:

    **BOTTOM LINE

Get it if you love to root and customize your toys. And if you do alot of reading outside.

The "closeness" you feel to the makers (not counting customer service off course lol) , the eagerness for David to take down GOLIATH (Apple). . I came to work and secretly borrowed a buddys ipad and did a side by side comparison......i touched the ipad screen and immediately decided to come write this review.

I am a pretty harsh critic of the ipad , especially because of its arguable lack of features, cost and lack of freedom. So i believe i should be equally harsh on the Adam because making EXCUSES for notion will NOT help them build a better product. I paid a total of $599.99 for this product.

    **PRO

Its not all bad. The Adam comes with more ports than you can almost count, sturdy, good speakers, decent form factor and off course FREEDOM of the android. The disappointment comes when you turn it on.

    **CON

    The screen

Why do i feel like i was bamboozled here? Am i the only one? I cant put my finger on it, but i FELT i was going to see a screen that would BLOW the ipad out of the water. I am not very technical so i will stray from technicalities here so as to avoid getting flamed. But i expected a sharper, brighter screen. Not a $800 XOOM screen, but is this what i should expect for $550?

Please dont advice me to get the LCD version,as that is not a solution to this problem. Maybe Pixel QI is not ready for prime time?

Reading with the Adam is not fun indoors due to its dullness UNTIL you go outside in the sunlight, this is where the Pixel QI shines. I had little problems though, for example the reflectiveness of the screen in the sun was uncomfortable. Also, reading in portrait mode dampened the experience as the screen is narrow which forces a smaller font size in order to see a full page.

    The viewing angle
The viewing angle is decent. But if you want to be HAPPY with it, DON'T do a side by side comparison with the ipad. If you do, you might also notice something else:

    The Pale colors
I cant put my finger on it, but its almost like the Adam screen is brownish and the ipad screen is whitish?

The pink elephant in the room

Ill say it....its on a lot of people's minds, you noticed it in all those youtube videos. Even the ones that the notion ink crew made. Screen sensitivity: The amount of pressure needed to get a response from this screen is a little too much. Especially for 2011. That is why when i touched the screen of my buddy's ipad, i decided to write this review.

    EDEN UI
Eden UI is Very Clunky. This broke my heart! i spent plenty hours watching youtube vids of panels flying by!! But right now i am not sure my experience with other Android UIs will be better since the android system is not just "there" yet for tablets. This is not the Adams fault (there i go making excuses ).

Am i expecting too much for $550?
I am sure i haven't experienced the awesomeness and power of the Adam and yes it is a decent product. But i just cant get past the screen and reading experience. And in retrospect, how many times will i read outside? Also, i cant get past this feeling that i was hyped to expect more here. Or maybe i would have been more excited if this product came out last year when it was supposed to.

    **BOTTOM LINE

Get it if you love to root and customize your toys. And if you do alot of reading outside.

I have learnt a lot about myself getting this product and i have realized something about the big bad wolf, APPLE, and their products. While their products don't do alot, it does SO little but does it SO well.
Thanks for the thoughtful review. I have been wondering for a long time now,( was it really just last June?) about the screen thing, which one cannot truly judge from, say another screen. I have been a dedicated follower of Notion for a long time but I am getting weary. I really needed it before a study abroad thing in June and I can't even get an order going. Maybe things work out for the best. I don't think I could deal with a sub par screen for $550. Thanks again for the review.

This makes no sense at all to me. It's not a pressure-sensitive screen, how hard you press on it will make no difference. Mine is so sensitive that there have been a couple of times where I swear I have not even touched the screen and it registered my finger.

I do agree with every complaint about viewing angle, even if certain people here will look down their nose and insult me for saying so. I didn't expect an iPad screen, even on the LCD model I bought. But I expected a screen better than a 15-year-old laptop. The cheap netbook that the Adam replaced had a better display. The Adam is on my desk in front of me. It is not on a stand, just laying on its back. I should be able to see the screen, but it's pretty much washed out unless I stand up and hover directly over top of it.

And, yet, I type with it at an angle of >45 degrees every single day and there isn't an issue. Admittedly that's in portrait mode with the search/etc. at the "bottom." I couldn't do that in the other portrait mode just as I couldn't do that in an "upside down," the major "problem angles." Seemingly, however, this remains a major "waaah waaah" for nay-sayers. (Not to say that there aren't a lot of problems with the Adam. If anything I just get tired of the whining because I'm $600 in bed, it works fine for me, and yet the major issues seem to be from people not being able to play video games...)

Since I'm in the hole and all that my comments are as biased as the whiners, of which this forum is dominated by since there are very few that are seemingly being productive about it. I have sat down with the Xoom, the Galaxy Tablet, the iPaid2, etc. and to be honest they're all as shitty or not as the Adam. The difference is how you use the things rather than anything else. I'll give you this, though. Android in general needs to catch up with the Apple battery power. The PQi screen is really not worth the ****-storm that the whiners are bringing down on it, but the LCD? If it is the same as the PQi without the advantages? I could understand the continual "waa waaa."

With that said, the forum seems to be pretty much dead but for these negative comments. I'm off to go and do something constructive with the Adam.

Pros and cons listed (with spotty agreement on screen sensitivity) seems about in line with most reviews.

Shame interest in NI in general seems to have dwindled. Official blog, NIA, NIH, NIF have quieted down a lot. NIconclave has some traffic going but mostly people reaching for help. Hopefully the major update promised in the blog post comes through big and brings people back.
