What is Eden X? Please explain

I am getting my Adam tomorrow and I am getting prepared what to do with it.

There are many references to Eden X but no one explained what it is.
Is this a modified version of Eden that comes with Adam and what are the advantages?

Also can someone guide me to descriptions of ROM, Rooting and Bricking and Unbricking because I never came across these terms and I am sure there are many like me.

    Thanks in advance.

ROMs are new to me and I'm still waiting for my PO2 to arrive (it's here in London so should be soon) and the below two videos do quite well in summarising how to install and demonstrate what they do from my reserach.

Maybe watch the EdenX first to see what ROM does then the second shows how to install a ROM and the Utopia ROM

You can find the download files on the NIH website in the ROMS section

Well, adam is, as you probably already know, an android device. Android is an Operating System or OS. Just like linux, windows, MacOSx are Operating Systems.

Now a ROM in this context (because ROM can mean multiple things), means that you get a modified copy of a version of an Android Operating System. Different versions of android, also get different code names, besides their numeric version names:
    • Eclair is android version 2.1
    • Froyo for example is Android 2.2
    • Gingerbread is Android 2.3
    • And of course Honeycomb will most likely become Android 3.0, since it's the first real tablet android version.

When people talk about "stock android", it's the unchanged or original version of it. So "stock gingerbread" means the original version of android 2.3. You'll need to know this, because some roms are based on some "stock android" version and some others on "notion inks eden". This way you'll know pretty much what to expect from a certain ROM.

In a sense, this also makes Notion Ink's Eden a ROM, based on android 2.2 with android 2.3 features implemented.

Now to get back to your first question of what EdenX is ? Well EdenX is a ROM which delivers an OS that is based upon Notion Ink's Eden. So indeed, as you guessed, "a modified version of eden". But it doesn't come with the tablet, you actually have to install it yourself.

To make a long story short, EdenX is seen as the bétter version of Notion Ink's Eden, because you'll get a lot of things installed from the start, which you won't have on Eden, such as:
    • Rooted (meaning you'll be able to play with EVERYTHING on the tablet and will have full access to the system, and of course it also means you'll be able to mess more things up )
    • Google Apps added
    • ADHOC networking (any 3G enabled device can function as a wifi base station to which you can connect other things via wifi, so they can get internet as well. ex. using your cellphone to get 3G)
    • Frame rate increase from 50 to 60fps
    • Gingerbread Keyboard (a lot of people like Notion Inks keyboard better, but I think you can install that afterwards)
    • SuperUser app (helps you do things on rooted adam in a more userfriendly fashion)
    • Youtube app
    • Home Switcher, incase you prefer some other launcher. Two more launchers already added to switch to (application that manages your home screen/launcher)
    • Live wallpapers added
    • VOLD fix for Linux users which removes the extra drive letter and allows you to copy data on the SD card without corruption.

There are a few other Adam ROMs out there, Utopia being the first if I'm not mistaken (based on stock android 2.2 with 2.3 features added on). Beast is the newest ROM, and was based on Utopia, adding onto that one. Then you have EdenX which is very different from beast or utopia, because as I said before, EdenX is based on Notion Inks Eden. Hope I haven't lost you yet. And then there's a few others. I'll add a link to the bottom of this post where you can read about all of them.

Bricking means you f*cked up and your device is not doing anything anymore. Unbricking hence means the fixing of that situation. If you install the ClockworkMod (Mod from Modification, so not a ROM, more of an add-on and useful application), it'll be easier to "take a step back" and return to a functioning state prior to bricking. (EDIT: whenever you have chosen a rom you want to test out, make sure you read the WHOLE thread relating to your chosen rom before attempting to install it, certain roms for example do NOT react well to the ClockworkMod. Don't forget your homework before attempting to use a rom! thanks JohnHJW for reminding me of this )

If you want to know more about this, I suggest you visit notioninkhacks:
Anyway, hope I didn't make things even more complicated for you, lol.

Just a sidenote: for the moment, changing to another ROM than Eden, will technically void your warranty. If I'm not mistaken NI is working on a different type of warranty. Read that somewhere on the blog I think, but I can't remember where or what exactly. => I remembered:
From the latest NIH interview, full version can be read here:
[Andy] It’s obvious that Notion Ink is a company geared towards openness and freedom, but a company has to operate via the rules of its investors and partners. Though we know that hacks violate the warranty many of use choose to be rebels. Rohan, have you violated your own warranty to test out the tools and ROM’s from Notion Ink Hacks?
[Rohan]Yes I have But we are pretty linient towards it and have not cancelled even one warranty. We support hackers. We would like to come up with a very unique kind of warranty which support hackers in near future!

    Good luck!

EDIT I: just received a mail from the admin of notioninkhacks, he's put online a wiki which will be very convenient for any newbie!

The people at notioninkhacks and the XDAforums really deserve a great debt of gratitude.

EDIT II: I also remembered reading this, which may help you out as well: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/...tion-ink-adam/

There, I think I've given you enough to read up on.

Please note that I don't recommend rooting, bricking or installing non official ROMS if you have no idea what and why you're doing it.

If you're not very technical (like some of us here at the forums) I suggest you stick with the custom software and updates which are provided by Notion Ink and are available through OTA (Over The Air).

Don't understand me wrong, and thanks breese for the great post, because I'm a big fan of customizing my tools (got a HTC Hero with custom ROM and my PC can't be called a PC anymore) but I hate to see people coming back with broken devices because they tried something which they weren't supposed to do.

Thank you Breese and everyone else.

Many thanks breese and everyone else who has responded.
    Also many thanks for NIH.

You did not get me lost, you actually answered my question in a very simple yet effective way.
I hope one day we get Android/Adam guide for dummies so that everything being said and developed is documented to help the Adam community.

I am of Dos/Windows background so very new to this new environment.

Again many thanks and keep up the good work.

And that, I think, is one of the reasons that I posted this thread. One hopes that we aren't going to get into the territory where newbies receive no support form the more experienced individuals beyond the fantastic ROMs themselves.

Thanks for all the nice comments

@Grezvany13 - lol! I wouldn't recommend "bricking" to anybody either. *heeheehee*

Perhaps people will want to change a Rom because they read it was better than stock Eden... so most of the time, that will be the reason why they'd like to try it.

And about knowing what they're doing, IMO when people read a guide and the thread of a certain rom and afterwards they think "ok, that's do-able", they are technical enough to give it a go. Most roms have a very neat step-by-step guide to follow and a lot of people can follow those. When they brick their adam, they can go to the step-by-step guide on how to unbrick. I love the fact that the adam community has done so much for newbies, it gives them an opportunity to feel why android is so great as well.

For example: Jakkar2992 didn't know anything about android either (did have computer knowledge, hope she doesn't mind me using her as an example here ), but managed to get EdenX on there with a little help of this forum (http://www.notionaddicts.com/forums/...m-Card-to-work). Which I think is awesome.

I agree it would be preferable to have somebody in your neighborhood that knows android better, but she did it with the help of this community.

As long as we all realize our own skill levels and are willing to do the necessary reading/research, we should be fine. By this I mean that when a person knows they're a n00b, then they should probably only do EXACTLY what is described in the guides to install a rom they would like to try out and just use the tablet after that like a regular user. And when they run into troubles, there's always the fora.

Very nice and helpful explanation but I'm not certain about this bit:

Doesn't the "how to" for EdenX on NIH say not to use ClockworkMod? I'm not sure why, but they must have a reason. Adam's own recovery application works fine except that the ROM image has to be named "update.zip" whereas ClockworkMod will accept any .zip I think.
