Reviews convince you to cancel and NI trying to charge you the fee? discuss

Well all the posts on here convinced me to cancel. It's very said that notion ink didn't realize their competitive advantage would be the reading experience on their pixel qi screen and they ruined that with the glossy layer and needing a screen protector. Having seen pixel qi as it is meant to be, matte style, on a netbook, I am very disappointed. The netbook pixel qi I have seen would easily compete with an ereader even inside. From the review videos the adam's implementation seems to be no where near what pixel qi is capable of if implemented properly.

So, regretfully, I cancelled. Now they are trying to charge me the fee despite me, at first, politely explaining that their November blog post indicated a matte screen. That was the last straw as they had already pushed back my shipping date twice (i was one of those "50"). I am furious with their customer service and doing a chargeback on my credit card as well as complaining to the BBB. I encourage others in the same situation to do so as well. I can't believe they are trying to charge people for cancelling when they aren't delivering the type of product they promised.

I wouldn't even bother to cancel. Just call up your CC company and tell them you were charged for a product and that it hasn't shipped and they keep changing the specifications and ship date......

I agree with the fee nobody made you preorder you are an adult and made the choice on a product yet to have been seen

On the other hand, I think it's interesting that the NI web site (not the blog, mind you) still says that "all the Adam's screen surfaces are made of pure matte glass that softens reflections under the brightest of lights, and prevents fingerprints."

If this was a major selling point to someone that preordered, and given the reviews that have come out so far, I don't blame them for canceling. That said, I do think that preordering is foolish to begin with, so maybe the cancellation fee is appropriate.

    Charge Back

I would agree with the fee if the device spec hadn't changed since ordering. But they have. A matte screen protector is not the same as a matte screen. And the web site still says "anti glare coating" which is no where in sight. I agree with the msirwilson. It would be like buying an IPod on ebay that was listed as having no scratches on the screen. Reciving it and finding the area over the screen all scratched up and the seller saying "But the actual screen inside isn't scratched and that is after all the screen". They didn't deliver the specs listed at the time of sale.
However I still want one. I wish my preorder hadn't errored out.

While I would agree with you in principle if they had shipped the product to the specs they had posted when I ordered, this is not the case. Any reasonable person would agree that there is a point at which the product is sufficiently different from promised so as to nullify the purchase contract. I would argue that the change from matte to glossy is just that because it chances the essence of the product - it can no longer compete as an indoor ereader. Therefore I have no obligation to NI because they nullified our agreement by changing the product. (Don't get me started on the shipping delays without updating me.)

I plan on using the Adam as an indoor e-reader. From seeing the vids, I'm not at all convinced that it won't be able to work that way. If you were expecting it to look better than the Kindle, you really do deserve to pay a fee. The fact that a matte screen needs to be added doesn't really imply it can't be used. I do agree that the language on the website is flat out false, and could understand a refund on that basis. But I think you're stretching things to say it cannot compete as an indoor ereader based on the videos that are out - one comparing the NI to the Kindle did say the Kindle was better but that both seemed to work fine for this.

If that's the case you should probably cancel to or I'm afraid you are going to be sorely disappointed. High gloss is one of the worst causes of eye strain and that looks to be very much the case here. I haven't seen a single video where it even looks half as good as even the 1st gen sony prs 500 reader. If you can find one please let me know!

At the risk of repeating myself, if I add the matte screen protector it looks like it will work just fine (I mention the NI/Kindle vid). Incidentally, I currently use my EVO for an e-reader, with a matte screen protector - it works just fine. The only question I have is the quality of the matte screen and how soon it will be for other matte screen developers to make their own versions.

EDIT: There's also a good vid of someone with lots of PDFs who indicated it worked fine for those.
