View Full Version : A few weeks with the Adam

I'm getting very frustrated using the Adam. The thing that bothers me the most is the touch screen sensitivity and lag. It's just shocking like something out of a cheap $50 GPS. This is very disappointing and makes the Adam unusable at times.

Sensitivity
Especially bad around the edges. I have to tap the battery icon several times to hide the top pane. Also links in webpages etc. Very clunky ... in fact so bad I smashed my screen the other day.

Lag
In games like angry birds there is a very noticable delay between when you tap and when the birds react. Very very annoying.

One more thing. I've got a stuffed pixel on my screen. It is obvious on dark screens e.g. boot up, but not so bad on the white screens.

you need to recalibrate your screen, you can do this by turning on whilst holding volume up and it is on the menu or I have an app called touch recalibrate from another site that works great, no need for rebooting, etc..

Thanks for your post. Can you please provide a link for the site?

He is referring to turning on your Adam in recovery mode: Turn on your Adam while HOLDING THE POWER BUTTON AND THE VOLUME "+" BUTTONS SIMULTANEOUSLY. Your Adam will boot up half way and display a utility menu. One of the options is to recalibrate the screen. Navigate down the list using the volume rocker, and when you arrive at the recalibrate option, use the power button as your [Enter] key. When the recalibration is complete, use the top option to continue rebooting into the normal mode.

As for finding the app he mentioned, why don't you try google.com

I installed the matte screen protector and in some ways the screen is too responsive. On long scroll pages I often end up launching something 2/3 of the way down the page by mistake.

I wish the UI guys would use the same interface the contacts have where the large Alpha Numeric pops up int he screen and you can control the screen from there. Most long scrolls are alphabetized and this would be a good handle. but I digress......

I have recalibrated the screen several times using the built in utility and the app, but the edge sensitivity is still pretty poor. That observation I agree with 1000% percent. As for the rest -- it's surprisingly peppy.

I have the matte protector on now and, indeed, I have noticed some differences.

First and, for me, most importantly? I'm not whining like a child because of it. ;) Secondly...?

Pros
I love the feel. My finger slides over the thing easily and it just feels great.
Cuts out the glare.
Fingerprints are reduced.
PQi experience is enhanced but for "con" later.

Cons
Fingerprints are reduced, but you get an average "smear" because of that.
You lose the clarity of the screen.

And that's about it. I ordered another screen from Tactus because someone made an arse of the installation, but on the bright side I'm going to punish this screen protector in the field to see how it handles life as an archaeologist. :D

But isn't losing the clarity a dealbreaker?

I am still yet to try the protector but I will soon to see for myself!

I felt that the matte screen protectors improves the viewing angle a "bit" at least with LCD adams. I wonder if NI can make an IPS screen variant too in addition to the existing ones!

I wonder if they will bring a better pixelqi screen on the road. Would be glad to see a pixelqi with the viewing angle of an ips screen

Not really. First of all, I'm using this for work and in most instances, even with the fuzzy focus, it more than offers the screen I need. Outside it over performs. I purchased a skinomi screen, similar to the one I have on my phone, but I haven't installed it, cause in the end the I think the glare would be a problem. I think an antiglare screen might be a sweet spot, but frankly, the OEM went on so smooth and its working so well, I don't want to take it off.

You will just have to try it for yourself. I was incredibly surprised on how smooth it feels. Much better than my skinomi on a Nexus 1.

Not really.
Ditto and for much the same reasons. When I talk about the "reduction in clarity" it is fairly minor, but the nay-sayers would jump up and down if I didn't mention it. I would guestimate an approximate drop of less than 10%. The only time that I notice the slight blurring is if I'm reading a letter-sized PDF with 11-12 pt font in full screen (i.e. you can see the entire page). I could read this fine without the matte screen protector, but with it I need to zoom in a little bit for comfort. Though I can still read it, it's a little bit of a strain.

(For fairness, though, I can also read similarly-sized lettering/documents on a 7" Pandigital Novel so your own experience my vary from this.)

I'm quite happy with the OEM screen protector for the reasons mentioned. I've also been using a nice app call LCD Density (set to 130) that allows you to change the resolution density... It doesn't work with all apps yet (sadly, it doesn't integrate google books) You also have to reset it each time after powering off, but it definitely seems to increases the sharpness. BTW, the author is the also responsible for the Thumb KB app. http://www.xda-developers.com/android/lcd-density-changer-application-v3-0-released/
