Reposting an initial assessment I gave over at the Paizo.com forums (http://paizo.com/paizo/messageboards/community/gamerLife/tech/anythingBetterThanTheIpadOutThere&page=2#66)

I got my Adam! I'll say up front because I know it's the greatest interest--I side-loaded Aldiko (they provide a direct link to the installer (http://aldiko.zendesk.com/entries/402881-download-aldiko-book-reader-2-0-aldiko-2-0)), imported my entire Pathfinder collection (that's pretty much everything thanks to my charter super subscriber status), and immediately had an entire virtual bookshelf full of glorious Pathfinder goodness! Of course, I wanted to stress test the thing so I went straight for the core rules PDF (adding for the non-Pathfinder RPG folks on Notion Addicts--this is a 578 page, full-color PDF with extensive hyperlinks coming in at 70+ MB). It opened faster than my laptop, scrolls marvelously, and has one-touch access to the table of contents for quick jumps. It is a beautiful, beautiful thing! I tried a few other readers--ironically but not surprisingly the slowest was the actual Adobe app--and so far Aldiko ranks as the top contender for my needs on the Adam.

Now, with that said, I'll turn to the overall package. I got mine on Thursday and it pretty much sucked up the rest of my time that day. I already knew from reading about other folks' experiences that a update patch was coming to address some initial over the air (OTA) update glitches and other findings. So, I spent the ext two days messing around with things, finding out which apps (like Aldiko) I'd want to check out, but not planning to seriously test the Adam out until I got the patch. It arrived on Saturday, with very easy instructions for application. So, I updated the device, rebooted, and went straight into putting it through the paces. The buggy bits that had been reported--the GPS, mail accounts not working quite right, etc.--were all working fine after the update. I got my Gmail account synced up for mail, contacts, and calendar. I then side loaded the SlideMe app for access to their market, loaded Angry Birds for my son, added the YouVersion Bible app for my ministry needs, and loaded the Dolphin Browser HD for an alternate browser comparison (I'm still torn between it and the native browser). Finally, I put the Photoshop Express app on for photo editing (works great!), Flash Player 10.1 for web sites, and the YouTube app for native HD support. So far I haven't had any problems with any of these. Oh, and I loaded Shortyz Crossword app for my mother-in-law.

With these all working, I turned my attention to the now-functional GPS. The OsmAnd app that comes with the device does have the ability to download nice vector maps for tons of places, but I've found it a bit slow. So, I loaded Google Maps, Google Sky Map, and Google Earth. This is were I hit my first glitch, as the Google Earth app didn't play nice. It messed up several other apps, so I decided this would be a good time to try out a rebuild. I had saved all the .apk files (the app install files) to a microSD card and had no personal data not already synced to Google, so I used the update procedures to wipe the device and reload everything--it took under 15 minutes to get back to my exact same state as before Google Earth! Mind you, I think I could have simply reinstalled the corrupted apps but thought this was a good thing to check out. So, back to the mapping...Google Maps hums along marvelously, tracking my position very accurately and spitting out navigation routes just like I'd expect. The Sky Map similarly hums along and my wife was suitably impressed. As I understand it, the 5.1 release of Google Maps will even support off-line maps like OsmAnd but I haven't tried that out as yet.

The Adam itself is very nice in-hand. The rounded edge makes it easy to hold like a book or rest on my hands/lap without sliding down. I'm very happy with the picture quality (I've got the LCD version--no need for the PixelQi bit and I'd rather let that tech mature a bit more), though I will say applying the shipped screen protector was irritating. That bit won't ultimately matter as I've got a Skinomi TechSkin shipping in now. It can belt out tobyMac and The Dead Weather very nicely over the speakers and I've got my Rhapsody account fully functional so my muisic options are huge. I've used my USB mouse, two USB drives, and a microSD card so far as plug ins. Oh, and plugging it directly into my laptop works great as well for file transfer. I haven't yet tried out the HDMI or Bluetooth features, but did rip one of our Phineas and Ferb DVDs to play an episode and it worked great.

Oh, I have noticed one oddity. The battery usage keeps showing Call Standby as the biggest drain--odd since this is a WiFi only unit with no 3g. I've tried turning on Airplane Mode to shut this down, but it hangs up. I've sent a tech support query in to check on this, but even with that I've not had to plug the device in at all during the day (I habitually plug all sorts of electronics in each night--part of my OCD traits).

I'm very pleased with the Adam...for $375 + shipping, it's doing absolutely everything I expected it to. Getting all these things working is probably a bit much for users that aren't comfortable with technology/gadgets, so I definitely think they'll need either Android Market loaded before going full retail or else partner with another source (like Slide Me) for getting apps if their own Genesis market isn't open.

So, there it is. Let me know if you've got any other questions!

Erian, you made my day. while waiting for my LCD +3g, this is the first review full of positive comments. Usage of adam may be different from yours, but still Adam is worth the money. If NI can manage updates properly then Adam is the tablet to beat. lets hope NI can manage it. thanks for your review. you can share some more of your opinions.

Just ordered my LCD/Wifi on the 9th. Can't wait to get it. I must know, how is the rez on angry birds on this tablet with the sideloading. My buddy at work is only waiting on an actual market (genesis)...he is iffy on phone apps running at a lower resolution on the Adam.

So yea, let me know about the Rez on sideloaded apps. Thanks!

From what i've seen all apps display very well. I havent heard any negative points from anyone on how phone apps scale up to the 10.1" screen. If you want a real live demonstartion, go to your local office depot, staples, sears and find the Viewsonic Gtablet. They have just about the same res and aspect ratio as the Lcd Adam. And try angry birds on it.

As noted, I have already purchased one, so honestly I am not worried. My co-worker is holding back from taking my extra invite to order...I should really just find a video review... I think Mada's had a shot of Angry birds that looked just fine. Thank you for the response though number01pup, appreciated. Hope you get yours soon...my ship date is noted in my siggy.

Nice avatar btw. Star Wars fan? Looks like the scene from Ep 3 of the fight between grievous and obi-wan.

Okay, some more thoughts with additional use.

I had some stability issues after loading up the apps, so I’ve been eliminating things one at a time to see what’s what. Thus far it looks like AndAppStore and AndroidPit were the culprits. I believe they do some sort of regular check and update on installed apps and my guess is that is messing with the network. Uninstalled both of these (the SlideME app seems to work fine) and I haven’t had any problems since regarding stability. I did also uninstall Dolphin HD as a browser for now, but it’s mostly because I like the tab features of NI’s browser better. A side note for apps, I haven’t found any good accelerometer games yet, for instance, both due to resolution and because they don’t seem to understand the orientation of the Adam. Let me know if you find one!

For the screen, I’ve found it looks very nice regarding brightness and colors. It’s comparable to my Latitude e6510 that I use at work and I have yet to try out an image that didn’t look crisp, sharp, and properly colored. With that said, the viewing angle is much better in portrait mode—I can lay it almost flat and still read everything. In landscape I can get it to maybe 45 degrees or so before it starts washing out. Since I read things in portrait and generally use landscape when I’m directly interacting with the device (like playing Angry Birds…yes, it runs at full resolution with no loss in quality and I’ve heard Greg even ran it through his HDMI to a 50” TV) this hasn’t been a major problem thus far, but I definitely wouldn’t call the landscape viewing angle stellar. I’ve also carried it outside and didn’t have any particular problems with visibility.

One oddity I’ve notated is with screen rotation. Most apps handle orienting the screen properly regardless of which end I hold up. The home screen, however (not the custom Eden view with leaves, the open space with all the icons) does not re-orient. I’m actually finding that for certain things I like the device “up-side-down” in landscape mode and it’s a little weird when I get back to the home screen and find it not oriented properly.

For responsiveness, the only thing I’ve had problems with so far is the notification bar. It sometimes takes 2-3 attempts to expand/contract the bar or to swipe it down. I’m actually finding that notification bar to be the most annoying thing on the device so far, but it’s because of the position and “always on top” state rather than the responsiveness. I would definitely prefer it to pop up on the bottom of the screen rather than the top, as right now it covers up app titles, the Home button for my Bible app, the URL bar for my browser, etc. Customization request number 1—let me specify where that dang thing pops up! Beyond that, the screen responds precisely and rapidly pretty much all the time. I did have to get used to a two-tap process when using the Eden view—one tap to focus on an app then another to execute whatever I’m wanting to do. I’m betting a lot of folks’ responsiveness issues are coming from this. But with that learned, everything responds as I would expect and without any irritating lag. Oh, and I did want to note that I’m presently using the Adam without the screen protector. I used it for a bit but didn’t like the look or feel. So, my responsiveness findings should be taken with that in mind. I’ve got a TechSkin coming to try out, so we’ll see how that works.

I already mentioned that Angry Birds has really good resolution, and I’m finding that to be the case with most apps. There are some that were obviously just not made with a tablet in mind (a marble rolling game that stayed at phone spec size, etc.).

Erian, thank you so much for your initial and additional thoughts. Given the sentiments many have on the notification bar, I truly believe it won't be long before we have an update that allows customizations of this bar. Software glitches and issues can be fixed, and I am glad to hear you are having enjoying your LCD version hardware.

Your welcome to all! Let me know any specific questions/requests you might have and I'll do my best to help. I did want to note that with regard to the viewing angle, you can greatly increase the angle by turning off the auto-brightness feature for the Display. Set up to max, I can read this website with the Adam almost flat to my eyes in landscpe (things like user avatars are still washed out), and I can lay it flat and see everything fine in portrait, even the colors in the avatars and such, Of course, max display is going to drain the battery faster...

I'm fiddling around now with the PlayOn media server I've got running to push Hulu over to my Wii. I'm pretty sure I can get it to work to the Adam as well (which would mean streaming Netflix, Hulu, etc. through the laptop to the Adam should work). I'll update as I figure things out. Right now I'm still working to get the Mobile broadcast function of the PlayOn server working, but I can confirm that the Adam will browse to m.playon.tv, auto-switch to /android, and try to find a server.

Let me know how it goes with the techskin. I was looking at those for mine. Also, I was thinking about running a media server on one of the older PC's I had, I was wondering how you like PlayOn in general?

How do you like the speakers on the Adam?

erian77
February-14-2011, 11:12 AM
Will do on the TechSkin. For PlayOn, I've been really happy with it. I've had to do a bit of fiddling between it and my firewall software, but that's to be expected (and means the firewall is doing its job). After setup, it runs nice and stable in the background and pushes things out to our Wii no problem (So well we've switched over entirely to Netflix + Hulu via PlayOn for our home entertainment needs and used the money saved from cable/satellite for charitable giving). They just released an update with some improvements on the Mobile access, which is what I've been working on for the Adam. I had to drop that effort over the weekend but will get back to it later this week.

For the speakers, I'd rate them as decent for something this small. They lack a lot of deep bass, but that's what I expected considering the size. We've been watching things like Phineas and Ferb cartoons and I've not had any problems. When I fire up my Rhapsody subscription I can really test things out and that's when the lower frequencies are most missed. I have, however, used the RCA jack to plug into my truck's speaker and can testify that the audio hardware is great once the small speaker size is not a factor. So, all-in-all I wouldn't call the speakers the best part of the device, but I'd rate them as high as any I've ever seen on something this small.

I believe the notification bar (green blinking part) was fixed in the most recent update...lol I dont have mine yet but I ordered on the 9th...so this is just what I gathered from the updates list released by people here and on notioninkhacks.com. Honeycomb is in development for the Adam and Eden as we speak according to Rohan. They hired out more people to complete this.

I found out the other day that my credit card was finally charged about a week later...so hopefully that means it will be shipping soon. I enter my email and password into the Feb 11 link on the site and it still just says paid with all my details.

Yep, the new update makes the notification bar far less annoying. As the update did not address the Cell Standby issue sucking my battery, I went ahead and rooted the device. I'm using EDENx now and wow is it nice! Full Android Market so I don't have to fiddle around looking for APK files. Everything is very stable and fast, and having a launcher on there with 5 screens is makes organizing all the apps I can now access much easier. This is a good preview, I think, of what we can expect out of the Adam once Honeycomb is implemented.

Also, I got PlayOn working and love it. Streaming my Netflix and Hulu accounts no problem, plus all the other "channels" you can get using plugins (see http://www.playon.tv/plugins).

Also to note, I believe PlayOn is now on the Android, you can find it here:

Looks pretty useful for a 10" screen android ;)

I believe there is a ROM you can run that will remove the cell standby, but they were saying it will remove the rooting. Hope they get this fixed in the next update...if there is one. Nothing on the blog this Saturday unfortunately.

How is battery life with EDENx?

I haven't run any specific tests, but for general use I've handled the thing on and off for roughly 12 hours and gotten down to 17% (general use included WiFi for emails, weather, web browsing, running games, Rhapsody music). This past weekend I did my firsts major test using the Adam for navigation, with a trip from Birmingham, AL to Chattanooga, TN. About 2.5 hours there and 2.5 back, running Google Maps (using cached maps) and full GPS the whole time. I tried OsmAnd but the screen refresh is just too dodgy... Anyway, it handled GPS being on that entire time and I found it accurately tracking my position and direction the whole time.

So, overall I'm very happy on the battery front at this point.

Yep, I've got the Android app running now and it's great. My next pass is going to be hooking the Adam up to our TV to test out the HDMI...

For the Cell Standby, I bypassed the ROM and just renamed the files myself (using Super Manager). I also renamed the Messaging app and PixelQiScrnCtrl since I don't needed either of those. Everything seems to be working fine so far.

I've not tried this yet, but that's a good suggestion. After I fiddle with the HDMI + PlayOn stuff noted above I'll try some printing.

Okay, good news on the printing front. I tried the Cloud Printing app from the Market (requires Google Chrome on a target PC) and it worked liked a charm. It even printed to my OneNote app, which could be very cool. I then loaded up the HP iPrint Photo app. It found my WiFi printer automatically (much better than my laptops usually do!) and printed straight to the printer no problem. I also checked out PrinterShare, which can apparently print a wide array of file types directly over WiFi. It also found my printer no problem, downloaded drivers, and spit out a test page. You've got to get the paid app for most features so I didn't go any further, but all indications are it works very well.

If you've got any specific printing apps in mind, point me in the right direction and I'll be happy to test.

Nice to know about the wifi printing as I have a dated Xerox Phaser like 4500 I think. Will be cool when i need to print pdfs and what not off the adam. In your opinion, what is the best of the PDF apps you have used? Keeping in mind, I will not have the PQi as I already have the kindle. So just LCD based PDF reading, in your opinion, which is the best PDF app?

erian77
February-23-2011, 01:43 PM
For PDFs, so far I've tried out VuDroid, Android PDF Viewer, PDF Viewer, BeamReader, Adobe Reader, and Aldiko (all free). The first four are painfully slow and/or don't render the pages properly in my tests (using a full-color, 261 page PDF file of the Pahtfinder Chronicles Campaign Setting weighing in at 57.96 mb). The Adobe Reader is fast and renders nicely. Aldiko is also pretty fast (I once thought it to be the fastest, but repeated use shows Adobe Reader to hold that spot) and renders well, with the added bonus of having a bookshelf UI that presents all my books, plus a nice system for tags and categories.

I've heard nice things about RepliGo, which is a paid app, and may try it out at some point.

erian77
February-28-2011, 11:55 AM
I just made my first app purchase and picked up ezPDF Reader for $0.99--I figured it was worth a dollar to test it out. It's about as responsive as the Adobe Reader, but has more features and functionality. So far it's now at the top spot for my PDF needs.

On another subject, I recently went browsing for good picture viewers and settled on PiQture and QuickPic as my top picks for free apps for now.

ddaypunk06
March-02-2011, 11:03 AM
Cool, I am probably looking at RepliGo or Aldiko (I do like that bookshelf feature myself). I play table-top RPG's sometimes and have a billion books (well, maybe 200 lol) in PDF format. I wonder how that would look in the bookshelf mode. Does the bookshelf remember all of the PDF's you have (from SD if possible?)

I may need to check out ezPDF as well. Many liked RepliGo as it has highlighting and note features.

I actually have never used any picture viewers other than the ones included with my phone, so I would be interested to know your thoughts (I am keeping track of a list of the apps I will be installing when I get my Adam in hopefully the next two weeks).

Have you tried to use Qik or Skype with the camera yet for chatting?

How is EdenX?

Side note: hope the tegra market comes to the adam, and also Amazon market was announced to be releasing this month!

erian77
March-02-2011, 12:46 PM
I put my entire Pathfinder RPG library into Aldiko. I liked the look of things on the book shelf at first, but quickly found it was very difficult to actually find what I needed. I ended up switching to a list view and sorting by tags, but that loses a lot of the Aldiko appeal for me (using it with PDFs). As such, I started kicking around for another solution and landed on Smart Shortcuts. With that app, I can take an entire screen (I'm using Launcher Pro with 4 screens right now) and fill it up with shortcuts to my PDFs on the external microSD card. It can create folders based on tags as well, so I can sort everything into Core Rules, People, Places, Monsters, etc. And you can multi-tag a file, so my Bestiary shows up in both Core Rules and Monsters. I then set exPDF as the default viewer for the files (I've found ezPDF faster than Aldiko on larger files--eager to see if RepliGo is even faster once I get some more fun-money, but I don't really need the note functionality). So, from the desktop I'm at most 2 taps away from any rule I need during a game. My first session is coming up next weekend and I'm eager to see how it runs in real play! Coupled with my Herolab character management on the laptop, it may eliminate the need for paper and books entirely, saving table space for maps and figs...

For pictures, I've settled on PiQture right now. Between it and QuickPic, the function to browse online sources won out.

I haven't tried out any chatting/video conference functions as yet. Probably need to hit that at some point...

For EDENx, I liked it a lot. It's a huge improvement over the stock OS, and seemed to work better for some of my apps than Utopia. However, for the last two days I've been running the StephenH ROM and I think it's now my favorite. The accelerometer seems to work better with this one and it's even more stable then EDENx was from my last run. For battery life, I've been using my Adam all day today, with WiFi on all the time and GPS running sometimes. So far I'm at 7 hours and 12 minutes and the battery shows at 51%. So, if it truly held constant I'd be looking at 12-14 or so hours of use before a charge. I've got ClockWorkMod running in the restore arena, and so can now switch between EDENx and StephenH as needed, but so far don't see much taht I'd switch back for.

Oh, and I've been modifying the heck out of the stock apps that run--I've killed off Messaging, OsmAnd, Nimbuzz, Solaro, etc. by renaming the APK files to OLD. That way they don't pop up as options when I've got another app I like better. I figured with the renaming process, I can just flip them back at some point if necessary.

I loaded the Nvidia Tegra Market as well--it's just a front-end to the HD apps on the Market of course, but it should make finding those easier. Again with the need for fun-money...

^^ thanks again for your continued insight into your usage.

The more I read the more I simply cant wait to hack and slash my adam like you have to yours.

The battery life you mentioned is most positive out of all your wrote.. the fact that you'd used it for over 7 hours and it was only at half shows just how good the battery can be with the proper mods. Very happy to hear this!

Yep, I'm very happy with the battery after the mods. Let's see...9 hours and 12 minutes in for the day, and I'm at 42% according to Spare Parts (curbed off using it for the last few hours as I was helping my son ride his bike).

I definitely understand the frustration of folks that are looking for a stock solution. Luckily, I've been doing tech for years and so am more in this for the hardware than the software. With that in hand and some able developers, all shall be good...

P.S. Back on one of my EDENx runs, I actually installed one of the battery management apps to try it out. I didn't have it on long, and my not have had things set proper, but I actually seemed to get worse battery life with it rather than better.

Better battery management without the battery manager apps has been the case with Android since version 2.0
